Mobile Blood Centers

Florida's Blood Centers (FBC) began in a small. four-room hospital wing providing about 100 units a month for transfusion purposes. Shortly after the start of World War II, as demand greatly increased, Floridians were called upon to build a fully operational blood banking facility. On April 2, 1942, FBC was incorporated as a nonprofit organization founded on the philosophy of people helping others with volunteer blood donations.

Since its inception, FBC has consistently provided the community with a safe and adequate blood supply and maintained a rich history as a pioneer In the blood banking industry. Some of these advancements Include the implementation of mobile blood collection units, advanced blood screening processes (such as West Nile Virus) and the establishment of the American Association of Blood Banks and the Florida Association of Blood Banks. Today, FBC has grown into a sophisticated state-of-the-art medical facility with dozens of locations and mobile units.

FBC is the largest blood center In Florida and is the sole supplier of blood to more than 70 hospitals and health care facilities throughout the state.

Florida's Blood Centers' mission is to provide a safe and adequate blood supply to our hospitals, to support world-class collaborative medical research into human disease, and to improve the quality of life for its employees, partners, donors, and community.

CARD NSU - Center of Autism (mobile unit)

Florida is home to many individuals with autism and related disabilities. In response to their needs, as well as those of their families, seven regional, nonresidential resource centers have been established at Florida State University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida at Gainesville, the University of Florida Health Science Center at Jacksonville, the University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Miami & Nova Southeastern University (UM-NSU CARD). UM-NSU CARD provides services within a three county catchment area that includes Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties.

UM-NSU CARD serves both children and adults of all levels of intellectual functioning who have autism, pervasive developmental disorders, autistic-like disabilities, dual sensory impairments, or sensory impairments with other disabling conditions. Our primary focus is to provide individualized, direct assistance to these individuals and their families. Services include family support, technical assistance and consultation, parent and professional training programs, and public education activities. CARD services are designed to build on the capacities of state and local resources, not to duplicate or replace them. UM-NSU CARD is funded by the Florida Legislature through the Florida Department of Education, and all services are provided free of charge.
